Our Bookshop of the Month heads north for April, up to the Topping & Company Booksellers of St Andrews. The shop is independently run and boasts a collection of over 45,000 titles with knowledgeable, passionate and enthusiastic booksellers to help their book-loving customers. Topping & Company also sell a fabulous selection of signed and collectable books which you can explore here. There are two other Toppings stores in Bath and Ely, both of which have the same charm and appeal as the new St Andrews branch, each with a striking blue shopfront that stands out on their respective high streets.
The events held by Topping & Company set them apart from your average booksellers, aiming to ‘provide rich illumination into an author’s work and help deepen the experience of reading’. In these events the audience are very much encouraged to ask questions directly to the author, whilst sitting back and enjoying a complimentary cup of tea or coffee that are always available in Topping & Company stores! The St Andrews branch have recently organised a talk by Alex Salmond, the former First Minister of Scotland, at the local university to discuss his recently published book. Other events at the bookshop itself include monthly poetry nights, that offer ‘the chance to explore and discuss writers at the forefront of contemporary poetry’. The poet for April is Annie Freud, winner of the Glen Dimplex New Writers’ Award for poetry, the daughter of Lucien Freud and grand-daughter of sculptor Sir Jacob Epstein.
